Back in the days of Yi Tish colonisation, whatever system on the mainland (of the then imperial dynasty) was probably enforced, or the date of the island's conquest by Emperor Jar Har. Leng presumably uses a relic from the God-Empresses of old or a more recent one like, say, the date of them regaining independence from Yi Ti ~400 years ago (coincidentally, around the same time as the Doom). Like the Dothraki, if the Jogos Nhai have a dating system, chances are it is based on some great (ancient) leader/ jhattar of theirs - like Gharak Squint-Eye (he seems to have exterminated the last giants in Essos, twice as large as their Westerosi cousins) or Zhea Zorseface (she reunified the surviving JN & utterly crushed Emperor Lo Bu's genocide campaign against them). As an aside, given proximity & that Bayasabhad literally contains the name of a Yi Tish city just about on the same longitude, I suspect that the PoH was a client state of the Great/Golden Empire. The sister cities in the Bones - Bayasabhad, Kayakayanaya, & Samyriana - surely derive theirs from their now-defunct foundation state, the Patrimony of Hyrkoon. Or it could be that local princedoms of imperial governors use their own datings instead, based on who knows what. Their vassal/colonial cities of Qarkash, Port Yhos, & the two on Qal island perhaps use the same, or their own foundings.Īs for Yi Ti, if there's a single system, then I imagine it would be based on something from the preceding Great Empire of the Dawn (take your pick of God-Emperor or whatever), current Golden Empire (say, its formation from/after the Long Night), or the founding of the current imperial dynasty. Qarth, of course, probably uses the date of their formation, itself perhaps inflated to make it appear more ancient than it really is. Although, assuming they have one, I imagine the Naathi's is (largely) indigenous. We know sfa about places like Omber (any Sarnori influence?), Faros & Port Moraq of Great Moraq (Valyrian/Ghiscari/Qartheen/Yi Tish?), Lhazar (Ghiscari/Valyrian/Qaathi?), or the smaller isles of the Jade Sea (Yi Ti?). Sad Saath could use their founding or some historical triumph, like one of the victories over Ibbenese invaders on the Sarne delta. Once he had achieved that, the Dothraki began their conquests against the Sarnori, ultimately leading to their dominion over virtually all of the grasslands of Central Essos. If the Dothraki have any dating system, then it's probably based upon Mengo (violently) uniting all of the khalasars under his rule after the Doom. These losses could then have let to the end of the God-Kings, with them being blamed for such disasters.

Plus, if this revolution was only decades after the Doom & not earlier, then the Dothraki had at least begun to push the Ibbenese from much of their mainland holdings. I wonder if those rulers were (seen as) puppets of the dragonlords & lost Valyria's protection after the Doom. The Ibbenese most likely go by the overthrow of their God-Kings sometime during the Century of Blood. And on Walano, at least, the Talking Trees would be a major part of date-keeping. Or from the birth year (or whatever) of a legendary native - like Malthar Xaq of Koj, aforementioned Xanda Qo of Sweet Lotus Vale, etc. If there's multiple systems, then perhaps each island/principality uses the founding date of their current duling dynasty. If the Summer Islands have a single system, then chances are it uses the date of unification under Xanda Qo, or their eventual victory in the Slavers' Wars (under her daughter & successor, Chatana Qo).

New Ghis probably uses its founding, especially if such was only post-Doom. Although, it's possible any/all of the Ghiscari city-states have their own based on the founding of Old Ghis, or whatever, as part of their pretensions to being the heirs of the Old Empire. Many/all of the cities of Slaver's Bay most likely use the Doom (too), given Valyria's domination over them for millennia & that it was their own subsequent independence. The same for, the now, Volantis-ruled Volon Therys, Salhorys, & Valysar. Morosh presumably uses whatever Lorath does, or it's own creation.

becoming Free Cities, unlike all of the other colonial Valyrian settlements), or the Doom itself. modern Lorath we know was founded in 1436 BC), independence from Valyria (i.e. Not a silly question, indeed, a very good one!īraavos surely uses its founding or Uncloaking, while the other Free Cities probably run their calendars by the dates of their own formations (e.g.
